Who buys molecular models?

Chemistry students, teachers, tutors and parents buy them. Students want a model they can hold to understand shape and bonds. Teachers want sets for a class that survive handling.

Which colors should you use?

A common school convention is black for carbon, white for hydrogen, red for oxygen and blue for nitrogen. Use these colors if you want models to match typical teaching sets, and say that you follow the convention. Keep the same colors across every kit so students learn them quickly.

• Print atoms in the right color, not by painting, when possible.
• Make sure bond connectors are a different color from atoms.
• Check that parts are large enough not to be a swallowing risk for young children, and label kits for older students.

How do you make strong connectors?

Joints are the weak point. Print connectors with extra walls, test a snap or peg many times and use a tough filament such as PETG for parts that are pressed together often. Adjust clearance until parts click without forcing. Settings differ by machine, so test.

Kits that teachers like

Listing and photographing kits

Show the assembled model beside a ruler, then the loose parts laid out. Name the molecule in the title if the kit builds it, and list the atom counts after you verify them. Use a plain light background so colors are clear. Do not claim the models are accurate to scale unless you checked them.

Questions about chemistry models

Are printed models accurate?

They are simplified teaching aids. Ball-and-stick models show connections and angles but not true sizes or electron behavior. Say that in the description so teachers understand what the model can and cannot show.

What material is safe for classrooms?

PLA is common for teaching models, but check local rules for materials used with children. Avoid painted finishes that can flake, and choose colored filament instead. If you are unsure, ask the school.

How many parts should a kit have?

Choose a number that builds a few useful molecules. Count the parts by hand before you list the kit, and include a few spares for lost pieces if your pricing allows.
