What does an Etsy 3D printing shop cost to run?

More than the filament. Your costs include material, electricity, printer wear, platform fees, packaging, shipping labels and photo supplies, plus the hours you spend on messages and listings.

Write them in two groups. Fixed costs repeat whatever you sell, such as a printer, a light box and a spool holder. Per-order costs change with every sale, such as filament, fees, boxes and postage. Seeing both groups side by side stops you from judging the shop by revenue alone.

How do you find the profit on one Etsy order?

Take the price the buyer pays, then subtract material, electricity, packaging, fees and the shipping you cover. The rest is what that order leaves you, before counting your own time.

• Check the fees in your own seller dashboard, because they change over time.
• Include the cost of failed prints by adding a small share to each item.
• Count free shipping as a cost you pay, not as a bonus for the buyer.
• Note any ad costs you pay for that listing.

Do this for your three most common items first. You will quickly see which ones carry the shop and which ones only look busy.

Which monthly numbers should you track?

Keep a simple monthly sheet with sales, fees, materials, shipping and hours worked. One page per month is enough.

At the end of the month, compare items. An item that prints fast, packs flat and rarely gets questions is worth more to you than a showy one that eats your evenings. Print more of what works and retire what does not. This is also the right time to set aside a small reserve for refunds and damaged parcels, so a bad week does not wipe out a good one.

Can you sell the STL files on Etsy?
